Transgender is a category of gender identity, referring to a person whose gender does not match the one assigned at birth (usually based on physical sex). For example, a person could be physically female (and thus assigned the female gender at birth) and have a male gender, or vice versa. Genderqueers are also considered to be transgendered.
Transgendered people may seek to take hormones to transform their mismatched bodies toward their gender, and may eventually have a sex change operation, in which case they are known as transsexual.
