Transgender is a category of gender identity, referring to a person whose physical sex does not match up to their gender. This could be a physical female with a male gender, or vice versa. Genderqueers are also considered to be transgendered.
Transgendered people may seek to take hormones to transform their mismatched bodies toward their gender, and may eventually have a sex change operation, in which case they are known as transsexual.
